FAQ
Paving questions
Are paving slabs cheaper than block paving?
Large slabs can cover an area with fewer units, but they need a very level, well-compacted base and are more likely to crack under vehicles. Block paving (bricks and interlocking pavers) spreads loads better, so it is the safer choice for driveways and parking areas. Slabs work well for patios, paths and pool surrounds that only carry foot traffic.
Which paving bricks are best for a driveway?
For driveways, interlock and concrete block paving are the strongest options because the units lock together and share the load of vehicles. Laid in a herringbone pattern on a properly compacted base, they resist shifting and rutting. Cement bond, Karoo and aggregate bricks are popular for walkways, patios and areas with lighter traffic.
How do you stop weeds growing between paving?
Weeds usually grow from seeds that settle in the joints, not from below. A good compacted base, tightly laid bricks and joints that are fully filled with paving sand reduce the gaps where weeds take hold. Topping up joint sand and sweeping regularly keeps paving tidy, and joint stabilising sand can help in problem areas.
Do I need a permit to pave my driveway or patio?
Paving on your own property generally doesn't need building plans, but rules can differ, for example if you are changing a pavement crossing, altering stormwater flow, or living in an estate with its own guidelines. Check with your municipality or body corporate if you're unsure. We'll point out anything we notice when we look at your site.
How long does it take to pave a driveway?
Most residential driveways and patios take a few days, depending on the size, the amount of excavation and the weather. We'll give you an estimated timeline with your quote.
